Vienna's history is not one of spectacular battles or of famous statesmen. It is one of farming, of nurturing the land through hundreds of years. People settle near water because it provides transportation and irrigation. Vienna real estate was settled by people only farming fifty to one hundred acres at a time. Following the Revolutionary War, Dr. Joseph Spencer was awarded 5,000 acres of land for his service to the fledgling nation. In 1794, he named his town Vienna after a battle in New Jersey in which he distinguished himself. When roads and railroads came through, the citizenry increased. Incorporated in 1935, today's Vienna is a thriving city of commerce and residences.
