The Virginia Territory paid its Revolutionary War heroes with land instead of money, of which there was little. Alexander Parker was such a hero, and the town bears his name. It was founded at the turn of the 19th century and chartered in 1820. The town sits at the junction of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers. It was also the end of the line of two roads and, later, two railroads. This meant transportation brought people on their way to Ohio and some of them stayed. When oil and natural gas were discovered following the Civil War, many more of them stayed. This went on into the 20th century, and today Parkersburg is still a hub of transportation and industry.
